This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of plastic surgeons, general surgeons, bariatric surgeons, RNs, and other allied health professionals.
Statement of Need/Program Overview
There is a growing need for body contouring following the rapid weight loss associated with bariatric surgery. This program will provide up to date information regarding the technical aspects and treatment plans unique to this population. Specifically, how to optimize results while minimizing risks to the patient.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the activity, participants should be better able to:
Discuss the selection criteria used to optimize outcomes
in post-bariatric reconstruction and maximize safety
Identify the limitations of reconstruction including
how realistic goals are met.
Describe strategies and new techniques used to achieve
whole body reconstruction after massive weight loss.

Program Director - Michael E. Tarnoff, MD, FACS
Tufts - New England Medical Center
Dr. Tarnoff is board-certified in General Surgery. Dr. Tarnoff obtained a B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis and an M.D. from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He performed his general surgery residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and completed his training at the Cleveland Clinic, where he served as a fellow in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery.
Dr. Tarnoffs clinical activity focuses on minimally invasive approaches to morbid obesity, gastroesophageal reflux disease, colectomy, splenectomy, adrenalectomy and other general surgical problems.

Dr. Kim recently joined the staff of the Obesity Consult Center at Tufts-NEMC in Boston following her services as a clinical fellow in Obesity Surgery. She graduated from Boston Medical Center in General Surgery. Dr. Kim is board certified in general surgery. She is involved in clinical projects and is the author of several book chapters, and journal articles in the field of bariatric surgery.

Dr. Rubin joined the University of Pittsburgh faculty after completing his training in plastic surgery at Harvard. He founded the UPMC Life After Weight Loss program, a multidisciplinary center for body contouring after gastric bypass surgery. In addition, he performs breast reconstruction and is co-director of the developing UPMC aesthetic surgery center.
Dr. Rubin has established an adipocyte biology laboratory within the division of plastic surgery, and studies adipose metabolism and tissue engineering of adipose tissue. His other research interest is xenotransplantation.
Guest Faculty - Joseph F. Capella, MD, FACS

Dr. Capella has one of the largest experiences in plastic surgery after weight loss in the United States. He has personally performed over 3000 body contouring procedures on weight loss patients. The majority of Dr. Capellas practice is dedicated to this area of plastic surgery. Dr. Capella lectures regularly at national and international plastic surgery conferences on his techniques.
Dr. Capella received a BA. from Cornell University and an MD from the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center. He completed a general surgery residency at St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital Center, New York, NY., Columbia University and trained in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Capella is an assistant clinical professor of surgery at the University Medical and Dental School of New Jersey.
He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
